Hi Ben and Matt,

First of all, I swear I wrote my article on finding good SciFi before I listened to you podcast on fandom.  The gist of my point in that blog is directly related to Ben’s points on fandom. Though I might quibble at some of the names he gave to his classes of story, for the moment I really can’t come up with anything better.

First, one thing to note that I don’t remember Ben mentioning though it was certainly implied.  Very few great stories fall into just a single category.  The Lord of the Rings, for example, is clearly in that epic category that deals with the big questions of life.   That was what Tolkien intended.  However, there are also strongly thematic elements as well as philosophical and even visceral elements. (But no allegory… Tolkien despised allegory 🙂 )  (more…)

OUAT – Manhattan (s2e14)

Well, for the moment I’m sitting pretty smug.  Not only did I get a lot of predictions right, Charming and Snow were actually discussing exactly the holiday situation and family relationships that I did just a few blogs prior.  I know I may sound a bit “gushy,” but I continue to be impressed by this show.  Pretty much everything in this episode has been telegraphed at some point, sometimes as early as season one.  Then the writers made the “Big Reveals” of the show at or near the beginning.  A cynic could argue that the episode was essentially over within the first 10 minutes.

And yet, my family and I were riveted until the very last moment.  It requires a great deal of courage for writers to risk the approach they did in this episode.  It also takes great planning.  When it’s done right, you get great television.  The consequences of a great many actions came due and the bulk of the episode was spent in the ramifications of those consequences.  This episode easily falls into my top three best.

OUAT – Tiny [s2e13]

Tiny is, of course, a relative term.  16 feet may be pretty short when everyone else around you is topping 20 feet.  However, regardless of Anton’s size, there was nothing “tiny” about this last episode of Once Upon A Time.  In fact, this was for me one of the densest episodes of the season, so far.  It wasn’t an action episode.  Nothing climatic happened.  Instead, we got a great deal of exposition and well as a lot of positioning for the remainder of the season.  All good stories have these moments where the action slows.  Both the need for exposition and for pacing demand it.  Often these “slow” moments can be rather dull.  I was impressed at how much that was NOT the case in this instance.  We learned a great deal and I suspect we are set up for a rather explosive next few episode.

So, what have we learned?  And what does it all mean?  I’ll break it into major sections.  Forgive me though if my thoughts come out a bit scattered in the process. (more…)

Help! Where Is the Good SciFi?

I seem to find myself in a bit of a conundrum of late.  I got a wonderful Christmas present this year; a fairly substantial gift card for Books-A-Million.  Unfortunately, after spending nearly an hour perusing their Science Fiction section, I threw up my hands in frustration.  Is there anything worth reading being published today?

While this is admittedly something of a rant, I am asking this in true sincerity.
